How We Support Your Child’s Sight

Eye exams are the cornerstone of all eye care, meaning it’s the first step we take to help support your child’s eyes and vision.

However, this doesn’t mean that eye exams have to be boring or scary. From the moment your child comes in for their exam, our staff will be by their side every step of the way to ensure they get the most out of their experience. We love working with children, and we tailor our entire process to keep your child relaxed and comfortable.

During your child’s eye exam, we’ll go over their health history, check their visual acuity, and examine their eye health for various signs of conditions and diseases. If they need prescription lenses, your child will have the chance to try on all kinds of kid-friendly frame styles.

How to Tell if Your Child Has a Vision Problem

While your child does depend on their sight quite a bit,
they still might have difficulty knowing if they have a vision
problem. They could be too young to communicate the issue, or they
may have had the problem long enough that they believe their vision is normal.

In either case, there are several behavioral signs your child may show that could indicate a vision problem, like:

  • Reading difficulties
  • Sitting close to the front of the class
  • Head tilting to see better
  • Constant eye rubbing
  • Holding reading materials close to their face
  • Poor grades
  • Trouble playing sports
  • Squinting
  • Regular headaches or eye pain
  • Closing an eye to read or see

If you notice any of these behaviors happening consistently, it might be time to book an eye exam to see how our team can support their vision.

Does Your Child Have a Vision Problem?

We start seeing children for eye exams around 6 years old.

Children enter school around this time, and they depend on their vision more than ever to help them learn, play, and interact with the world around them. On top of this, their eyes change quite rapidly, which could lead to vision and eye health problems.

By looking for these potential problems during your child’s eye exam, we can manage or even correct them before they can affect your child’s quality of life. Some issues may require contact lenses or glasses, but others may need medications or dedicated treatment to help correct them.

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is one of the most common refractive errors children can develop.

Generally occurring as they enter school, myopia affects the quality of your child’s distance vision. Though they might not have any problems with seeing up-close objects, they could have difficulties seeing the class whiteboard, watching presentations, or playing sports.

Myopia progresses throughout childhood, sometimes up to the age of 20. Without treatment, myopia may become high myopia, an issue that could increase the risk of certain eye diseases and retinal detachment.

One way our team can help manage myopia development is by offering multifocal contact lenses. Some studies have shown to reduce myopia progression by 43%!

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is a common eye condition many children can experience.

Pink eye is generally an infection that can cause redness, wateriness, and mucusy discharge from the eye. Children can contract it from other children through bacteria or a virus, but allergies and chemical exposure can also cause symptoms.

In some cases, pink eye can be treated with antibiotics, eye drops, or allergy medication. However, if chemical exposure is causing symptoms, the situation may require emergency help, so we recommend speaking to our team as soon as possible.

Amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes) are both eye conditions that can affect the alignment of one or both of your child’s eyes.

Both conditions typically develop before your child enters school, but they can cause serious vision problems if they aren’t addressed. If both of these conditions progress for long enough, your child’s brain may ignore images coming from their “weaker” eye, resulting in vision loss in that eye.

Treatments for these conditions can include corrective lenses or eye exercises.
